Chess sets can be bought that are made of many materials. Chess is an old game of strategy and skill the likes of which have never be duplicated in another game. The traditional wood chess set is still a favorite among lovers of the game. These can be bought that are hand crafted and have a special appeal about them. Chess is full of history and dates back hundreds of years.
If you are lucky then you may be able to find an antique chess board. These are lovely pieces but may cost hundreds of dollars. I once saw a board that was reported to be a couple of hundred years old and from China. Of course the price was very steep but it would have been a gem for any collector. Hand carved boards and pieces tend to be much higher in value.
You can also buy chess boards made from plastic and glass. These are practical enough and can be used the same but lack some of the elegance of their wooden counterparts. Of course some chess boards are bought more for show than actual use. A person may have several that only sit on a shelf and then others that are for playing on. Read more...

Kyle Boller filled in for an injured Mark Bulger, and the St. Louis Rams improved to 2-1 on the NFL preseason with a 24-21 victory over the host Cincinnati Bengals. The Rams led 24-14 heading into the fourth quarter, but a Bengals TD early in the frame made for some drama down the stretch.
Boller did withstand a hard hit from linebacker Keith Rivers that knocked his helmet off his head. Rather than leave the game, he calmly picked up his helmet and finished the drive. After the game, he talked about the play:
“I could have slid a little earlier. It is what it is. My chin strap hit just above my eyes. It was a good scramble, but maybe if I can get down a little sooner, the coaches would like that.”
Rivers also commented on the play, insisting that the hard hit wasnt intentional:
“I was just trying to get to the ball. It wasn’t anything intentional.”
Boller had struggled last week but played well this week. Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo gave him credit in his postgame comments:
“He moved the team. He drove us down there after the bad start. When you score on a drive, the quarterback deserves the credit.” Read more...

Had things happened differently, Nick Diaz would forever be part of MMA history. Regardless of how his career transpired after February, 2007 he should have been remembered as part of one of the greatest fights ever. His PRIDE 33 matchup against Takanori Gomi should have created an indelible legacy. It was a mixed martial arts version of Gatti/Ward or Castillo/Corrales 1. It should have been the biggest victory of Diaz’s career and the centerpiece of his highlight reel.
Unfortunately, Diaz’s moment of glory lasted only about six weeks. On April 10th, the Nevada Athletic Commission announced that hed failed a drug test. Diaz had tested positive for marijuana, and his THC level was off the charts. The Nevada Athletic Commission considers a THC level over 50 a positive result for marijuana usage. Nick Diazs THC level was an astounding 175 and that led NSAC Chairman Dr. Tony Alamo to speculate that in this situation marijuana was a performance enhancing drug. The rationale was that during the fight Diaz was feeling no pain”literally. Diaz was fined, suspended and the result of his almost certain fight of the year winner with Gomi changed to a no decision. Hall of Fame QB Brett Favre may get all of the headlines for the Minnesota Vikings, but NFL insiders are well aware that running back Adrian Peterson is the key to the teams offensive success. Peterson’s threat alone is enough to open up options for the passing game. After winning the NFL rushing title last year hes already off to a great start with 272 yards and four touchdowns in only two games.
There’s been a good deal of concern this week in the Twin Cities media about Peterson’s health. Specifically, there are questions about the severity of a back injury suffered last weekend. Peterson has been limited in his practice activities all week as a precaution, though both he and QB Favre as listed as probable on the NFLs official injury report.
Peterson minimized the significance of his injury in comments to reporters:
“God willing, I will be out there playing. Not a big deal at all.”
He launched into a comedy routine when asked for details on the injury. Asked when the injury occurred, Peterson quipped:
“It happened, like, a week back. But that’s all behind me now.” Read more...

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira left a lot of questions unanswered in the wake of his UFC 92 loss to Frank Mir. After the fight it was revealed that hed suffered from a staph infection during training, severe enough to land him in the hospital for five days. He insisted that the loss was entirely attributable to his illness. At UFC 102 from the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon, Big Nog made a compelling case that his loss to Mir was a definite aberration. Nogueira dominated a determined Randy Couture over three rounds, en route to a unanimous decision victory over the UFC Hall of Famer.
Nogueira entered the arena first to his usual entrance music of Gimme Shelter by The Rolling Stones. He received a respectful welcome from the Rose City crowd, but nothing like the rousing ovation afforded local hero Couture. Couture lived in suburban Gresham, Oregon for a number of years and trained at Team Quest before leaving to start Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas. Hes still a beloved figure in the Portland area, and his wide grin during Bruce Buffers introductions give the impression that he still has a lot of affection for his former hometown. Read more...

There are few experiences as an angler that match the thrill of landing a trophy fish while surrounded by beautiful scenery and pristine waters. Just within reach of the North Pacific Current, the Queen Charlotte Islands in British Columbia, Canada are a perfect setting for just that moment. The islands provide moderate temperatures and a perfect habitat for many species of sport fish as well as an incomparable environment for the fishermen who pursue them.
Game fish abound in this northern wonderland, with many people flocking to catch themselves a King salmon, one of the main attractions. These much sought-after fish thrive in these waters, and can weigh anywhere from 30 to 100 pounds. To catch one of these incredible fish, also called a Chinook or spring salmon, is a monumental occasion for any seasoned angler.
Coho salmon, sometimes called silver salmon, are another sport favorite. Additional species common to the area include red snapper and ling cod, and another great attraction is the abundance of halibut. The waterways around the Queen Charlotte Islands also harbor such aquatic delicacies such as Dungeness crab, one of the most important species of crab in the Pacific Northwest. Read more...
